Laundry detergent in plastic is not only wasteful, but harmful to the environment. We’ve got a much greener solution.
Sometimes known as soapberries, Soap Nuts have to be one of favourite every zero waste solutions and one of our biggest plastic free tips. When we first started to use them, we couldn’t believe how handy these little gems were. And they literally grow on trees. You don’t get much more natural than that. Soap Nuts can be used as a zero waste washing powder to replace conventional tablets and liquids.
Soap Nuts are the dried shells of fruit, which contain natural soap like properties. They contain a substance known as saponin, which is released as soon as they come into contact with water. Simply throw them in with your regular wash in place of chemical tablets or liquids. Plus, they’re fun to use too! Zero waste solutions don’t have to be dull.
Used as a plastic free washing powder, Soap Nuts are hypoallergenic and soft on skin. They don’t contain any fillers, foaming agents or bleach, so they’re also part of a natural, low-chemical home.
What Do I Do With Them Once I’m Done?
Soap Nuts are compostable, so you can just throw them in your compost pile and allow them to decompose and replenish your garden soil (we told you they were one of our favourite plastic free tips!)
